Gargash: Syrian Factions' Links to Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda Concerning Indicator

UAE Position Reflects Hesitation and Caution Toward Syria's Political Changes, with Clear Concern About New Forces' Nature and Ideological Connections
Prominent UAE diplomat expressed "concern" about identity and relationships of Syrian armed formations that overthrew Syrian regime president Bashar al-Assad and assumed power in Damascus.
Anwar Gargash, UAE President's Diplomatic Advisor, stated during "Global Policy Conference" in Abu Dhabi, Saturday (December 14, 2024): "We hear reasonable and rational statements about unity, not imposing system on all Syrians, but on other hand, I think new forces' nature, Brotherhood connection, and Al-Qaeda connection, all very concerning indicators."
UAE official explained: "We must be optimistic on one hand, help Syrians in today's difficult task, but simultaneously can't ignore region witnessed similar episodes before, so we must be careful."
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham led by Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, now known by real name Ahmed Al-Shara, revealed severing Al-Qaeda ties in 2016, though still listed "terrorist organization" in several Western countries, primarily United States.
Mohammed Al-Bashir, charged with heading transitional government until March 1, pledged transforming Syria into "law state" ensuring "all people's and sects' rights," amid international community concerns.
UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's Diplomatic Advisor emphasized in speech necessity "working to avoid past mistakes."
Anwar Gargash denounced Israeli attacks on Syria since Assad's fall aimed at dismantling Syrian army military capabilities, considering "exploiting Syria crisis to structurally reduce Syrian capabilities might seem right thing from Israeli perspective, but I think it's stupid policy."
Added: "New Syria being created, they should've sent different message. Not saying peace message as we're not there yet, but different message."
UAE began Israel relations 2020. Israel today targeted "former regime military sites" in and around Damascus, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
