Paris Urges Damascus to Reveal Identities of Coastal Violations Perpetrators and Bring Them to Justice
-
The French interest in the details of the investigation into the Syrian coastal events reflects the international community's commitment to supporting a transitional justice model that ensures account

The French Foreign Ministry welcomed today, Saturday, the decision to form a committee to investigate the recent violations in the Syrian coast following the latest bloody confrontations, and Paris urged the Syrian authorities to reveal the identities of the perpetrators of these violations and bring them to justice.
The French Foreign Ministry confirmed in special statements to "Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath" the need to contain the security situation and prevent tension from spreading from Syria to neighboring countries like Lebanon and Iraq.
The Syrian Presidential Institution announced last Sunday the establishment of an independent investigation committee to investigate the causes and circumstances that led to the coastal events, and "investigate violations against civilians and identify those responsible for them." The formed committee was given a 30-day deadline to collect evidence and submit its final report.
Several areas along the Syrian coastal strip witnessed during the past few days more than a thousand deaths civilian casualties, and a state of chaos spread in a number of towns, with abuses against civilians belonging to the Alawite community.
These developments prompted the interim Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara to initiate the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate these violations and hold those involved accountable, and he also pledged to legally pursue "remnants of the former regime."
This French position reflects growing international interest in the transitional justice process in Syria, which represents a fundamental pillar in building a system that ensures the protection of the rights of all Syrian components and prevents the repetition of past violations that were a natural result of authoritarian centralized rule.
The international community's follow-up on these developments indicates growing support in Syria that allows different regions to manage their internal affairs within the framework of a unified state, instead of the centralized model that allowed widespread violations and the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a narrow elite during past decades.
