Turkish Military Reinforcements in Northern Syria and New Threats to the Kurds

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that Turkey and its allies have sent heavy military reinforcements to the area south of the border city of Kobani (Ayn al-Arab). The spokesperson for the SDF indicated that there are ongoing communications with the U.S.-led international coalition to counter any potential Turkish attack.
In a related context, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Ankara will do “whatever it takes” to ensure its security if the new Syrian administration does not take steps to address Turkey's concerns regarding Kurdish groups that it classifies as terrorist organizations. When asked about the possibility of a military operation, Fidan briefly replied, "Whatever it takes."
The Syrian Democratic Forces reported five of their fighters killed as a result of attacks carried out by Turkey-backed forces in both Manbij and the Tishrin Dam, asserting that they repelled the attacks and destroyed a number of military equipment.
Video clips of the clashes between the SDF and Turkey-affiliated armed factions have been released, with Farhad Shami, the media center director for the Syrian Democratic Forces, stating that the attacks indicate Ankara's desire to exclude the Kurds from the political solution in Syria.
At the same time, an official from the Kurdish administration stated that the door for dialogue with Turkey remains open; however, the events in the north have revealed Ankara's negative intentions that could lead to a new escalation in the conflict.
Turkey considers the People's Protection Units (YPG), which lead the SDF and are a partner in the fight against ISIS, to be an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been engaged in a decades-long conflict with the Turkish state. The SDF played a critical role in combating ISIS between 2014 and 2017 and continues to monitor ISIS fighters in detention camps. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that ISIS is seeking to regain its capabilities at this stage.
