Conflicting narratives about control of the international highway indicate state of confusion in regime ranks facing sudden attack
News sites in Aleppo reported Thursday evening that "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham/Al-Nusra Front" and allied opposition militias succeeded in cutting the Aleppo-Damascus international highway (M5) after taking control of the Engineers Countryside area and Al-Zarbah town west of Aleppo.
An opposition commander revealed that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham/Al-Nusra and their allies launched an attack on regime forces' positions in Al-Rashideen Fourth District, the western entrance to Aleppo city, after securing control of the strategic towns of Kafr Naha and Khan Al-Asal.
Coinciding with these developments, Syrian regime media outlets and social media platforms circulated photos documenting the arrival of regime forces commander Suheil Al-Hassan, nicknamed "The Tiger," to Aleppo to participate in repelling opposition attacks.
Regime media outlets rushed to deny opposition control of the international highway, confirming that regime forces temporarily closed the road due to military operations in its vicinity.
Authorities issued instructions to transport companies to suspend bus movement in the area due to ongoing confrontations near the international highway.
The attacking militias managed to extend their control over Al-Zarbah town in southwestern Aleppo countryside, in addition to controlling the First Engineers Countryside areas, Kafr Joum, and Al-Barqoum west of the city.
