Escalating violence in the Sahel: mass executions and victims including civilians

Reports indicate that armed factions loyal to the new Syrian government executed about 125 individuals, including civilians, in the coastal region of Syria during clashes with supporters of the ousted Assad regime on Friday.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented widespread field executions that included men and young people without distinction between civilians and fighters, with a total of 240 fatalities recorded since last Thursday, including 100 security forces and 15 civilians.
These clashes began after an ambush by militants loyal to the Assad regime on Syrian security forces in Latakia province, resulting in the worst day of fighting since the regime's overthrow three months ago.
In a video address, interim president Ahmad Al-Shara urged the armed factions loyal to the Assad regime to lay down their weapons and to avoid targeting civilians.
In response to the attack, the Syrian government mobilized thousands of soldiers in the region and commenced attacks using helicopters and artillery. Disturbing footage documented mass executions of 40 civilians in the village of Al-Mukhtariyah, reflecting the escalation of violence.
While the Syrian Ministry of Interior did not take responsibility, it confirmed that steps were being taken to avoid violations. Amid rising clashes, the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for the protection of civilians and respect for international law.
The new authorities in Damascus are seeking to establish security, while the risks from local tensions and economic pressures are escalating. A transitional government is expected to be announced soon, which will serve as a test of the new rulers' commitment to plurality and inclusiveness within society.
