Sudani Calls for a Comprehensive Political Solution in Syria During His Visit to Tehran

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani called on Wednesday for a comprehensive political solution in Syria to end foreign interventions. This came during a joint press conference with Iranian President Masoud Bezhkishan in Tehran.

In his remarks, Sudani emphasized that Syria's stability is key to the stability of the entire region, stressing the importance of dialogue as a means to resolve conflicts in Syria and rejecting the language of threats toward neighboring countries. He expressed Iraq's commitment to maintaining balanced relations with regional and international parties, praising the will of the Syrian people to choose their political leadership.

The Iraqi Prime Minister also expressed his country's readiness to cooperate with all parties to achieve stability in Syria.

For his part, Iranian President Masoud Bezhkishan underscored the importance of achieving security in Iraq. During the press conference, he stated that recent developments in the region were discussed with Sudani, expressing shared concerns regarding the situation in Syria. He pointed to worries related to Syria's unity and the resurgence of the threat of terrorism, emphasizing the necessity of cooperation and wisdom to counter this threat.

Bezhkishan also spoke about discussing the implementation of the security agreement with Iraq as part of cooperation between the two countries.

Sudani had arrived in Tehran on an official visit leading a governmental delegation, and is scheduled to meet with senior Iranian officials to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. The statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's media office indicated that the visit aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and discuss common files, in addition to analyzing the developments taking place in the region.

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baqaei, had previously announced Sudani's visit to Tehran, confirming that it comes within the framework of bilateral consultations between the two countries.
