U.S. State Department Urges Citizens to Leave Syria Due to Deteriorating Security Situation
America

The U.S. State Department has issued an announcement requesting its citizens to leave Syria, citing the "volatile security situation" prevailing in the country amid ongoing armed conflict.

In a statement released today, Monday, the department confirmed that "the security situation in Syria remains unstable and unpredictable, with rising violence and terrorism in various regions." It noted that American citizens should depart the country if conditions permit. Those unable to leave should prepare emergency plans and be ready to remain in place for extended periods.

The State Department also reminded that the U.S. Embassy in Damascus has suspended its operations since 2012, meaning that the U.S. government is no longer able to provide any routine or emergency consular services to American citizens entering Syria. It indicated that citizens needing urgent assistance to leave the country should contact the U.S. Embassy in the country to which they intend to travel.

The department mentioned that American citizens wishing to leave Syria through the Jordanian border can use the "Nassib-Jaber" crossing, which is currently still open.

It is worth noting that the United States severed diplomatic relations with the ousted Syrian regime in March 2014, halting the operations of the Syrian embassy and consulates in the country, and ordering non-American diplomats to leave in protest against the Assad regime's crackdown and violence against Syrians calling for freedom following the outbreak of the revolution in March 2011.
