The People's Republic of China, Wednesday, urged all parties to maintain "calm and restraint" following Russian President Vladimir Putin's decree expanding nuclear weapons use.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said during a regular press briefing, "Under current circumstances, all parties should maintain calm and show restraint by working together through dialogue and consultation to ease tensions."

The spokesperson emphasized that "China's position encouraging all parties to de-escalate and commit to a political solution to the Ukraine crisis remains unchanged."

At the start of day 1,000 of the Ukraine conflict, Putin signed a decree increasing the likelihood of using his country's nuclear arsenal, responding to Washington's greenlight for Kyiv to use long-range American missiles targeting sites within Russia.

The Russian President's warning emerged in late September about possibly considering any attack by a non-nuclear state like Ukraine, supported by a nuclear-armed power like the United States, as "joint aggression" potentially warranting nuclear weapons use.

Western nations strongly rejected Moscow's nuclear doctrine modification. French President Emmanuel Macron strongly opposed Russia's "escalatory" approach in Ukraine, calling on his Russian counterpart for "rationality" and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to exercise "all possible influence" on Moscow to stop the Ukraine war.

Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, China consistently calls for launching peace negotiations and respecting all countries' territorial integrity, including Ukraine's.

Since Russian military operations began in Ukraine in early 2022, Beijing maintains its neutral stance in the conflict. However, its relationship with Moscow has notably developed since then, providing diplomatic and economic support.

In this context, Western powers allied with Kyiv have sharply criticized Beijing for not explicitly condemning the invasion.
