UN Envoy's Statements Reflect Realistic View of Political Transition in Syria, Acknowledging Challenges Facing Democratic Transition Process
UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, praised the results of Riyadh meetings, considering them an opportunity for Syria to communicate with the international community.
The UN envoy explained during his interview with Al Arabiya/Al Hadath that the interim Syrian caretaker government does not control the entire country, but noted a relative stability.
Pedersen conveyed the Syrian administration's intention to hold a national dialogue conference within the next three months, emphasizing its inclusiveness of all Syrian societal components.
He revealed receiving UN guarantees about forming a transitional body representing all Syrian components within three months, indicating international readiness to cooperate.
The UN official expected the Syrian election process to take 4-5 years, stressing the necessity of stopping Israeli interventions in Syrian territories.
Pedersen addressed significant challenges in northern Syria, hinting at possible modification of Resolution 2254 or adopting a new resolution. He expressed confidence in lifting international sanctions on Syria if promises are implemented, noting 17 million Syrians need humanitarian assistance.
The Riyadh statement confirmed support for a political transition including all Syrian forces, working to address challenges through dialogue while respecting Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
