Arab and Islamic Summit Draft Calls for Urgent Election of Lebanese President
-
The summit's focus on the Lebanese file indicates real fears of military confrontation expanding to include the entire region

The draft resolutions of the Arab and Islamic Summit included the need to expedite the election of a president for the Lebanese Republic, form a government according to the constitution, and implement the Taif Agreement.
The project details highlight strong condemnation of ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon, violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and calls for an immediate ceasefire, along with comprehensive implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) in all its provisions, emphasizing solidarity with the Lebanese Republic in confronting this aggression.
The draft includes strong condemnation of targeting civilians, systematic destruction of residential areas, forced displacement of people, and targeting of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon "UNIFIL." It also indicates support for Lebanese constitutional institutions in exercising their authority and extending state sovereignty over all its territories, and affirming support for the Lebanese Armed Forces as the guarantor of Lebanon's unity and stability.
The extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic Summit continues in the Saudi capital Riyadh, with the participation of 50 Arab and Islamic countries. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman opened the summit proceedings with a welcoming speech.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman clarified that "the Kingdom renews its categorical rejection of Israeli attacks in Gaza, and rejects the diminishment of the Palestinian Authority's role," and confirmed that the Kingdom opposes obstruction of humanitarian organizations' work in Gaza.
Earlier, Riyadh received Arab and Islamic state leaders and their representatives to participate in the summit. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan organized a preparatory meeting, attended by Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed Mustafa, and his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bou Habib.
Estimates indicate the approval of recommendations formulating a unified Arab-Islamic position to confront the consequences of Israeli escalation, focusing on the importance of the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state.
