Germany Plans to Deploy Patriot in Poland.. to Protect Supplies to Ukraine

German authorities proposed on Thursday an initiative to install Patriot air defense units on Polish territory to enhance protection of weapons flow routes to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The German Defense Ministry revealed in a statement that it submitted a proposal to NATO including sending these systems at "the beginning of the year" to ensure the safety of "supplies of vehicles, equipment and ammunition that Kyiv urgently needs to defend its territory."

The ministry's statement explained the possibility of the system being stationed in Polish territory, a NATO member, for up to half a year. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated, "With this, we will protect a logistical center in Poland that is pivotal in delivering materials to Ukraine."

Germany had previously deployed a military force of 300 soldiers, along with three Patriot system units in Poland during the period from January to November 2022.

These forces are stationed in an area about 50 kilometers from the Ukrainian border strip to provide protection for the area and secure the railway line connecting the two countries.

Although Berlin tops the list of military aid providers to Ukraine within the European Union, German military capabilities are under increasing pressure due to years of investment shortages.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's efforts to strengthen German military power, following the outbreak of the Russian war on Ukraine in February 2022, face financial and logistical challenges that hinder achieving this goal in the near term.

Scholz's government maintains its position refusing to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles, contradicting the approach of other allies such as the United States and Britain.
