Unknown Individuals Disturb Hafiz al-Assad's Grave in His Birthplace of Qardaha

The grave of former Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad in his hometown of Qardaha, located in the Latakia countryside, witnessed an unexpected incident when it was disturbed by unknown individuals, sparking widespread controversy on social media. Recent videos and photos showed the grave after it had been disturbed, with the remains relocated to an unknown location.
On social media, Syrian activists circulated videos showing the grave, known as the "Tomb of the Eternal Leader," which had been dug up, following months after it was set on fire by armed groups during the events in the village of Qardaha after Bashar al-Assad's regime fell on December 8 of last year.
At the same time, notable opposition figures were observed gathering at the site of the grave, documenting their reactions to what they consider a victory over the regime they have been in conflict with for decades. Their celebrations of this incident, which included setting fire to the grave and filming it, sparked a range of opinions among supporters and opponents.
It is worth noting that Hafiz al-Assad was born on October 6, 1930, and died on June 10, 2000. Before ascending to the presidency in 1971, he held several government positions and was a military officer in the Syrian army. Following his death, his son Bashar al-Assad took over the presidency until his regime was toppled in December 2024, leading to radical changes in the Syrian political landscape.
The current scene reflects the division and tension within Syrian society and highlights the ongoing effects of the prolonged conflict.
