Kuwait's Court of Cassation issued a new verdict convicting 13 Kuwaiti citizens in a Hezbollah financing case, overturning the previous acquittal.

The court intensified the punishment for the defendants with three years imprisonment and a hefty fine of 27 million Kuwaiti dinars.

Kuwaiti media reports explained that the defendants exploited charitable work as a cover to collect donations for the organization classified as terrorist.

The conviction decision contradicted the previous Criminal Court ruling, which was based on the absence of legislation criminalizing fundraising for public purposes without a license since 1954.

Al-Qabas Kuwaiti newspaper confirmed that the Court of Cassation saw the necessity of punishing all defendants for their involvement in the criminalized act.

This ruling is considered an important judicial precedent in combating terrorism financing and addressing the exploitation of charitable work for illegal purposes.
