-
The timing of the visit indicates persistent Iranian attempts to consolidate its military influence in Syria, despite repeated Israeli strikes on strategic sites
Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh has begun an open-ended visit to the Syrian capital Damascus accompanied by an official delegation, where he intends to hold meetings with senior political and military officials, according to the Syrian regime's news agency "SANA".
The agency explained that "officials will discuss the latest developments in the region in general, and enhance coordination and cooperation between the two friendly armies, contributing to the continuation of fighting terrorism and achieving security and stability in the region".
The official Iranian news agency "IRNA" indicated that Nasirzadeh will hold dialogue sessions with several senior officials in the Syrian regime during his stay in Damascus.
Media sources close to Tehran reported that Nasirzadeh arrived in Damascus Saturday evening heading a security delegation, noting that he will meet Sunday with his counterpart in the Syrian regime, General Ali Mahmoud Abbas, along with several prominent officials.
Following his plane's landing in Damascus, Nasirzadeh made a statement saying: "Everyone knows Syria's important position in Iranian foreign policy, and we came to Damascus at the invitation of the Syrian Defense Minister."
He continued: "We will have meetings with political and military officials to discuss several common issues between the two countries, especially in the field of defense and security, aimed at expanding cooperation and exchanging expertise between the two sides".
This visit coincided with the escalation of Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, which Tel Aviv confirms are targeting facilities belonging to Hezbollah and Iran, as well as military sites belonging to the Syrian regime.
