Iranian Supreme Leader's Statements Reveal Tehran's Dissatisfaction with Syrian Regime Ignoring Repeated Warnings, Indicate Regional Powers' Involvement in Changing Syrian Scene
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei initiated his first stance since former Syrian regime president Bashar al-Assad's regime collapse, pointing accusations toward neighboring country, following repeated Iranian statements recent days about Syrian people's right to self-determination and leadership choice.
Khamenei stated in remarks that "neighboring country played role in Assad's overthrow," adding his country "warned Syrian government since September about threats but it ignored enemy."
Iranian Supreme Leader hinted at external conspiracy saying: "What happened in Syria is result of joint American-Israeli plan," emphasizing his country "possesses evidence of both America and Israel planning military coup in Syria."
Iranian and regional sources revealed Tehran's dissatisfaction with Assad regime reassuring control despite armed factions' advance on major cities and government forces' withdrawal, indicating Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi conveyed message to Damascus last week about country's inability providing more military support.
International and regional positions varied toward developments. While United States welcomed Assad regime's fall, Israel took cautious position toward "armed factions."
Turkish position showed clear support for factions controlling Aleppo, Hama, and Homs, indicating Damascus as next destination, noting Foreign Minister met Araqchi day before Damascus control, calling for political solution.
