Kremlin Warns of Catastrophic Consequences from Israeli Military Expansion into Syria
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency, the Kremlin, warned that the expansion of Israel's military operation into Syria would have "catastrophic consequences" for the Middle East.
In statements reported by the Interfax news agency, Peskov noted, "Unfortunately, the scope of hostilities is already widening. We see that a Lebanese front has now been added. This leads to the destruction of civilian infrastructure, displacing tens and hundreds of thousands of people, depriving them of their homes, livelihoods, and businesses, among other things."
Peskov emphasized that Moscow would "rather not think about any further geographical expansion of military operations," stressing that "the consequences would be catastrophic for the region."
In response to a question about Russia's possible reaction to an Israeli ground operation in Syria, the Russian official indicated that "it is inappropriate to speculate on any hypothetical responses."
These remarks from the Kremlin spokesperson come after "Syrian TV" reported the incursion of Israeli tanks, accompanied by armored vehicles, which began creating a military dirt road in the Golan Heights within Syrian territory.
The images show land being bulldozed and trenches being dug in the area adjacent to the border fence, coinciding with the Israeli escalation against Lebanon.
The photos also depict the vehicles accompanied by a military force consisting of six Merkava tanks and two military bulldozers along with several Israeli soldiers entering Syrian territory.
The expected route to be worked on stretches over 70 kilometers from the north to the Syrian-Jordanian border, initially starting approximately 200 meters from the borders of the occupied territory but expanding to more than a thousand meters inside Syria near the towns of Ofania and Al-Hurriya.
This move is considered a violation of the " disengagement agreement" signed in 1974 between Syria and Israel following the "October War," especially since the new road lies east of the "Bravo Line" established by the agreement.
