Moscow Supports Ankara's Efforts to Remove U.S. Forces from Syria
The Russian envoy's statements reflect Moscow's desire to maintain its pivotal role in the Syrian file while preserving the interests of its regional allies in the area

Russian President Vladimir Putin's Special Envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, stated that talks about a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian regime President Bashar al-Assad are "premature".

Lavrentiev clarified on Wednesday that there are no fixed dates for quadrilateral talks bringing together foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Syria. He pointed out that military communication continues between Damascus and Ankara, however, obstacles prevent the talks on normalizing relations from moving to the political level.

The Russian official indicated that the guarantor countries of the "Astana" process (Russia, Iran, and Turkey) have not discussed the possibility of inviting the Syrian regime president to participate in a summit within the "Astana" format, planned to be organized in Russia next year, according to "Novosti" agency.

Putin's envoy emphasized that Moscow will support Erdogan's efforts to discuss the withdrawal of American forces from Syria with the elected U.S. President Donald Trump, considering that renewing communication channels between Moscow and Washington during Trump's era would help reach a more effective solution to the Syrian crisis.
