Hostile Statements by Turkish Minister Hakan Fidan Reveal Ankara's Attempt to Undermine French Efforts to Protect Northern Syria's Stability
Tension escalated in the Syrian file with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's hostile statements targeting the French role in the region, in a clear attempt to undermine international efforts to protect stability in northern Syria.
Fidan presented a hardline stance in statements to journalists in Istanbul, saying: "Our only interlocutor in this matter is America", adding in a condescending tone: "Frankly, we do not give consideration to countries trying to serve their own interests in Syria by hiding behind American power".
The Turkish minister emphasized his country's hostile positions, stating: "We have said this many times: We cannot live under such a threat. Either another party takes this step or we will", repeating previous warnings issued by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkish statements deliberately ignored the vital role of Syrian Democratic Forces in managing dozens of prisons and camps holding thousands of extremists, with Fidan describing these forces as "merely a jailer whose role is being exaggerated".
Fidan continued his attack on France, saying: "What France should do is retrieve its citizens, transfer them to its prisons, and prosecute them", adding: "It is wrong to ask the People's Protection Units, another terrorist organization, to keep these prisoners in exchange for support".
France continues, in cooperation with Washington, diplomatic efforts to prevent any potential Turkish aggression in the region, emphasizing the pivotal role of Syrian Democratic Forces in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability, despite Ankara's continuous attempts to undermine this role through ongoing military operation threats.
