Sudan's Foreign Minister: Jeddah Agreement is Basis for Peaceful Solution
-
Agreement's seven points reflect intense concern for humanitarian aspects and civilian protection as top priority in addressing Sudanese conflict

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef emphasized on Saturday the necessity of building any peaceful settlement between conflict parties in Sudan on implementing the Jeddah Treaty.
It's worth noting that the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces signed the "Jeddah Agreement" six months ago as an initial step followed by additional talks, aimed at achieving a sustainable truce.
The document included seven main axes, led by the commitment to preserve civilian lives as a fundamental pillar, while emphasizing respect for Sudan's sovereignty and territorial unity.
Both sides agreed to consider Sudanese citizens' welfare and security as a fundamental goal, pledging to ensure civilian protection in all circumstances, allowing safe passage from confrontation areas, prohibiting child recruitment in the conflict, facilitating transfer of injured and sick without discrimination, and opening access for humanitarian institutions to perform their duties.
Sources indicated these steps stemmed from parties' recognition of the need to reduce people's suffering due to ongoing fighting since April 15, 2023, especially in Khartoum, and in response to current humanitarian conditions.
Signatories confirmed their commitment to basic principles of international humanitarian law to facilitate relief work meeting population needs, while maintaining signatory parties' legal, security, and political independence status, without linking this to any political track.
Both parties welcomed Sudan's friends' efforts to ensure respect for international humanitarian and human rights laws, confirming immediate commitment to implementing the declaration, while continuing to work with all international legal obligations and principles related to armed conflict, especially the 1977 Second Additional Protocol to the 1949 Geneva Conventions.
