Two Arabs Lead Top Health Positions in Trump Administration
-
The President-elect's choice of two Arab-origin competencies reflects the growing role of Arab immigrants in US leadership positions

The president-elect Trump's administration has created a new turning point in the history of Arab immigrant expertise by nominating a second doctor of Arab origin to hold a senior position in the American health sector.
Trump has initiated the selection of Coptic Egyptian doctor Martin Adel Makary to head the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal institution responsible for regulating and licensing food and pharmaceutical products in the United States.
This nomination follows the appointment of Jordanian doctor Janet Nashiowat as Surgeon General, marking these appointments as a milestone in representing Arab expertise in senior health positions in America.
The importance of the FDA presidency position is reflected in its pivotal role in regulating the American food and drug sector, with authority to grant or deny licenses for food and pharmaceutical products in the US market.
The FDA is one of the oldest American federal institutions, established in 1906, and oversees industries worth over $2.5 trillion, including food, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
The agency's decisions receive global attention, as its standards and approvals influence global markets, and many countries rely on its evaluations in regulating their local markets.
Dr. Makary possesses extensive experience in the American health sector, having held leadership positions in prestigious medical institutions and contributed to developing innovative health policies.
The Arab backgrounds of Nashiowat and Makary reflect the growing role of Arab immigrants in the American healthcare landscape, where doctors of Arab origin represent an increasing percentage in the American medical system.
These appointments highlight the Arab community's contributions to developing the American health sector and their ability to assume leadership positions in the most important federal institutions.
