The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has confirmed that seven years ago, Russian aircraft carried out a violent attack on a crowded market in the town of Atarib, resulting in the death and injury of hundreds of civilians. This attack reflects a deep humanitarian tragedy and a historical impact manifested in the suffering of the Syrian people, who bear the burden of the ongoing conflict.

In a statement released by the embassy, the United States emphasized that it remembers meticulously and honors the victims of these indiscriminate attacks on civilians, which constitute a flagrant violation of human rights. These attacks have highlighted the urgent need to hold accountable those responsible for such acts, which undermine efforts for peace and stability in the region.

The embassy also expressed its strong support for the calls of the Syrian people for peace, dignity, and security. It affirmed that justice and accountability must be integral to any political process aimed at ending the conflict. Continuing to support human rights and demanding justice are essential to ensuring a better future for Syria and its people.

The U.S. government, in cooperation with its international partners, seeks to promote constructive dialogue and provide the necessary support to achieve a comprehensive settlement that meets the aspirations of Syrians for a better life. Commitment to human dignity and accountability for the crimes committed remain key pillars of U.S. policy toward Syria.

Amid the ongoing challenges faced by the Syrian people, the voices calling for peace and accountability remain strong, reflecting the determination of Syrians to achieve their rights to freedom and dignity in their homeland.
