Establishment of Independent Institution for Missing Persons in Syria represents victory for victims' families' struggle and important step toward uncovering truth and achieving justice

Ms. Karla Quintana has officially begun her duties as head of the Independent Institution for Missing Persons in Syria, declaring her commitment to uncovering the fate of all Syrian missing persons without discrimination.
In her first statement from Geneva, Quintana noted the pivotal role played by Syrian families and survivors in establishing this unprecedented UN institution, citing the words of Ms. Fadwa Mahmoud from "Families for Freedom" organization.
The Institution's head emphasized that her mandate covers all missing persons in Syria, regardless of their nationality or affiliations, whether their disappearance resulted from kidnapping, arbitrary detention, or military operations.
Quintana indicated that recent developments in Syria represent a historic opportunity to uncover the fate of the missing, especially with many families being reunited with their loved ones who were detained for years.
The Institution pledged to work and coordinate with all concerned parties, including interim authorities, member states, and international organizations, while prioritizing families of the missing and civil society.
The Institution's head warned of the risks of tampering with records and sites of importance, emphasizing that even well-intentioned actions could harm chances of uncovering the truth. Quintana confirmed that knowing the fate of missing persons in Syria represents a crucial step toward sustainable peace, calling on the international community to provide necessary support for the Institution.
