The UN Security Council has strongly condemned attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly hospitals in Syria, in an official statement issued recently.
The Council expressed deep concerns about the impact of violence in Syria, exacerbating sectarian tensions in the country, calling on all Syrian parties to immediately cease hostilities and incitement, ensuring the protection of civilians and public facilities.
The UN statement urged Syria to adopt decisive measures to address the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, emphasizing the country’s obligations under UN Security Council resolutions related to counterterrorism.
The Council demanded that the interim Syrian government hold those responsible for recent mass killings in the country accountable.
The statement called for urgent, transparent, and independent investigations in line with international standards to ensure that all perpetrators in Syria are brought to justice.
It appealed to the international community to respect human rights under all circumstances and ensure humane treatment for those who have surrendered or laid down their arms.
The Council urged additional international aid for civilians affected in various parts of Syria immediately.
It called on the interim Syrian government to provide protection for all Syrian citizens, regardless of their ethnic or religious identities.
The statement concluded by reiterating UN Security Council Resolution 2254, emphasizing a steadfast commitment to Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
This statement comes amidst continuing security disturbances in various parts of Syria, particularly in the coastal region, which has recently witnessed widespread violence resulting in hundreds of casualties, amid local and international calls for the restoration of security, stability, and the protection of civilians throughout Syria.
