US troop deployment in Romania raises threat against Russia: Kremlin
The deployment of US forces in Romania increases danger for Russia and Moscow will take it into consideration when ensuring its own security, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Wednesday (Oct 26).
"The closer US forces are to our borders, the greater the danger for us is. Of course, the better we counter and will continue to counter when ensuring our own security," the spokesman said, commenting on deployment of the US forces.
In any case, the spokesman said, such deployment of US troops near Russian borders "does not lead to increase of predictability and stability" in the region.
Earlier, CBS reported that the US 101st Airborne Division, deployed in Europe, is ready to enter the Ukrainian territory in case of further escalation between Moscow and Kiev or an attack on a NATO member state.
Kremlin: No hope for positive shift in ties with Britain under Sunak
Washington announced this relocation - the first in almost 80 years - during the reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank last summer. According to CBS, this includes 4,700 servicemen.
Colonel Edwin Matthaidess, commander of the division’s 2nd brigade, noted that his unit is currently closer to the Ukrainian territory than any other US forces and is "watching closely" the actions of Russian forces, "setting training goals" and having exercises that "precisely" imitate what is happening in Ukraine.
