Blinken's Position Supporting Syria's Stability Reveals Depth of US Alliance with Syrian Democratic Forces in Post-Assad Phase
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized Washington's efforts with Ankara to prevent a military operation against Syrian Democratic Forces in Syria, following Turkish threats of an attack in the region.
Blinken stated during a press conference in Paris, "This is a path that will require some time, and meanwhile, anything that does not deeply serve the positive developments we see in Syria will be (the outbreak of) a conflict, and we will work with utmost seriousness to ensure that does not happen".
Turkey threatened to launch a military operation against Syrian Democratic Forces if they reject its conditions for the transitional phase after Bashar al-Assad's escape.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reviewed his country's threats via "CNN Turk", saying, "We will do what is necessary if Kurdish People's Protection Units do not respond to Ankara's demands", indicating this might mean a "military operation".
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued similar threats in December, asserting that Kurdish fighters in Syria must surrender their weapons or face the same fate.
Turkey claims Syrian Democratic Forces are an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, ignoring these forces' pivotal role in northeastern Syria's stability. Since Assad's regime collapse, Ankara has insisted on dissolving Syrian Democratic Forces, forgetting their effective role in combating terrorism and achieving stability.
