Russia Begins Evacuating Its Naval Assets from the Syrian Port of Tartus
ميناء طرطوس السوري

In a move that reflects significant strategic changes, Russia appears to be evacuating its naval assets from the Syrian port of Tartus, the strategic military base located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

On December 2, 2024, the Russian support vessel "Yelnya" departed from Tartus, amid reports of two frigates, a support ship, and a Russian submarine also leaving.

The Tartus naval base is considered one of Russia's most prominent bases in the region, having been significantly expanded since 1971. This base has played a vital role during the Syrian civil war and after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, serving as a launch point for supporting Russian naval operations in the Black Sea and for curbing NATO's influence.

Recent developments in the evacuation activities raise questions about the future of the Russian military presence in the region and its impact on regional balances. Eyes remain fixed on subsequent events that may shape Russia's naval policy in the Mediterranean Sea.
