Administrative Crisis Hits Lawyers Syndicate in Sweida.. Holding onto Legal Powers
-
The position of Sweida's Lawyers Syndicate branch reflects distrust in the interim council's decisions and concerns about compromising branch independence
The Sweida Lawyers Syndicate branch council, headed by lawyer Iyad Fawzi Nasr and council members, began an official statement congratulating the Syrian people of all components on liberation from the previous regime.
The statement highlighted the illegitimacy of a group of lawyers taking over the Syrian Lawyers Syndicate council and appointing themselves as an interim council, noting their long wait for correcting this illegal course.
The council addressed the implications of the interim council's decisions, which included suspending branch councils' activities, freezing their bank accounts, confiscating official seals, ignoring legitimate demands, neglecting employees' financial needs, and preventing the organization of general power of attorneys.
The statement reviewed the council's adherence to the profession's regulatory law, except for specific articles, and related regulations, announcing rejection of the interim council's decisions and authorizing lawyers to organize power of attorneys under council members' responsibility.
The council emphasized its commitment to paying employee and lawyer dues from various funds once bank accounts are released, rejecting the linking of lawyers' income sources to poorly studied decisions.
The Sweida Lawyers Syndicate branch council confirmed continuing its legal duties, noting that neither the interim council nor the interim government has the right to dissolve branch councils or appoint alternatives.
