Russia's Lavrov Claims U.S. Prioritizes Containing China Amid Concerns About Russia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the task of containing China will be a priority for the United States under Donald Trump's leadership, highlighting that America perceives Russia as a "threat today," as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
In an interview, Lavrov noted, "I believe that the mission of containing China, as outlined by the Biden administration, will remain a priority for the Trump administration. We (Russia) represent a threat today."
He elaborated that Washington cannot allow Russia to establish itself as a "strong player" and will persist in accusing it of attempting to undermine the reputation of the West.
Lavrov emphasized that the most important concern for the United States is its reputation; it is indifferent to the genuine fate of peoples, particularly that of the Ukrainian people.
Last Monday, the Kremlin denied reports suggesting that President-elect Trump had communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, dismissing the news as mere fiction.
The "Washington Post" was the first to report on the alleged phone call that took place last Thursday, and "Reuters" subsequently published a report about it.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin has no specific plans for a conversation with Trump at this time. Prior to that, a source informed Reuters that the President-elect had spoken with President Putin, advising him against escalating the war in Ukraine, while President Biden plans to urge Trump not to abandon Kyiv.
For his part, Stephen Cheung, director of communications for Trump, stated, "We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders."
Trump is set to assume office on January 20, following the defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election held on November 5.
